Balance of Life

Since I was still a kid, I always ask whether I can choose my own life. I always heard from my parent saying that life is tough and working hard is a must for them in order to maintain current life style. Is that entirely true, and do we really have to work so hard just to get what we want? When I grow up, I saw the same thing happen to myself and people around me.
